Out with the Performance Review
Recently published in the Wall Street Journal was an article by Dr. Samual A. Culbert, a consultant, author, and professor of management at the UCLA Anderson School of Management in Los Angeles, boxing for the removal of the dreaded performance review.
To Dr. Culbert "a one-sided accountable, boss-administered review is little more than a dysfunctional pretense. It’s a negative to corporate performance, an obstacle to straight-talk relationships, and a prime cause of low morale at work." Dr. Culbert goes so far as to say that "Even the mere knowledge that such an event will take place damages daily communications and teamwork."
Dr. Culbert argued seven reasons why he found performance reviews ill-advised and useless:
- Two people, Two Mind-sets
- Performance Doesn’t Determine Pay
- Objectivity Is Subjective -
- One Size Does Not Fit All -
- Personal Development Is Impeded
- Disruption To Teamwork
- Immorality Of Justifying Corporate Improvement
To Dr. Culbert’s credit, after chewing out the traditional performance review, he offers an alternative - "two-side, reciprocally accountable, performance previews".
